I love fashion’s throwbacks because it always turns possible the reutilisation of many things you have deep in your closet, forgotten. The oxford are one of those many things – also the brogues -, two kind of shoes which I am going to talk about today.

OXFORD x BROGUE

First things first: let’s take a look at the history of both shoes to learn the difference between them. Yes, there are a subtle difference between brogues and oxfords and once you’ve learned, it becomes easy to see.

The oxfords owned this name because they used to be the main shoes wore by english students, from the Oxford University. It has commonly a slim nozzle and some sewing finishings in the vamp and in the length. They are originally found in black or brown colors, but nowadays they earned a bigger variety of tinges.  

Because of its swanky concept, earned all over the years, the oxfords always were types of shoes for social outfits or casual chic ones. Later they earned a more democratic concept and started been used to other occasions, too. 

The brogue is easily confused with the oxford model, because they are really very similar – except for the finishing parts in the brogues, made by little holes in the leather. Its origin is Irish – they were commonly used in farms – and its confection were hand made by the XIX century.  

Later, in the USA, brogues earned a more fancy concept and started been used in parties and social events. Ever since then, brogues started been made in several colors and the bicolor one – black and white – was the traditional tinge on that time.

NOWADAYS’ FASHION

Both are originally male shoes, but, nowadays they are made for women as well. They also earned many different colors and finishings. Prada, for example, has created brogues for 2011 collection, inspired by both oxford and brogue types, in many colors with a platform. 

Talking about the dress code, I would say that everything depends on the context of the outfit and also the color of your shoes: sober colors remit to a more formal dress code, while various and vibrant tinges are more appropriate for relaxed and casual outfits.

WHERE TO FIND?

Once it has already been trendy in some seasons you might find one of those deep in your mama’s closet or a friend’s. Otherwise you can reach a pair in many stores, specially, the fast fashion ones that use to sell cheap and pretty models.
